December Rain Totals and Weather

This December's rain totals have been good for the course! The rains help leach out salts that have accumulated in our soils for all of 2012. This reduction of salts in the soil helps the plant take in water and nutrients with greater ease.

We have had 10 days of recorded rainfall this month, totaling 2.54". For the most part, the rain has been light and steady only getting about 1/3" at a time.  Rain fall in this manner allows the course to maximize the rain rather than have have large amounts of runoff which can overwhelm the course.

We welcome the cold storm systems and the rains they brings to Southern California but most importantly, we welcome the snow that these systems bring to the Sierra Nevada's and our local mountains. Without snow pack in our mountains, our drought will likely continue.

As temperatures drop to and below 38 degrees, we will see frost on the course and could experience early morning delays. Please bear with us as we will do our best to get you out on the course. Driving range tee will shift mats during frost delays then return to the grass as temperatures rise.

Have a great new year and see you on the course.

Last Week's Rain

The past storm system brought us almost 3/4" of much needed rain to the course. The rain from last week's system was light and spread out over three days allowing for the ground to soak up much of the rain fall.

Run off from cart paths flows into our lakes thus reducing the need for us to fill them. With the cost of irrigation water so high, this past storm will help us to reduce water use while still maintaining the great playing conditions.

The forecast calls for a couple of small weather systems in the next couple of weeks, but the current weather is great, so take advantage of this Southern California winter weather.

Wood Chip Installation and Course Beautification

We wanted to share some of the process with the introduction of the wood chips in and around the golf course.   If you have been out lately, you have seen not only the work going on, but the progression and improvements to the course and playing areas.

We started on October 15 and plan to be completed by mid to late December.  To date, we have removed 4 acres of turf, which is 5% of irrigated turf on the property.  By completion, we plan to remove an additional 4 acres of turf, totaling 10% of irrigated turf on the property.

The main goal is to reduce our demand for water and continue beautification by reintroducing native trees and shrubs.   We have already begun on holes 1-9 with Sycamores, Oaks, Lemonade berry, and Toyon.

In order to limit disruptions to players, we are altering starts between tees 1 and 10.  This should give the crews more time to complete their work before any play catches up to them.

New DG paths have been constructed in the newly created wood chip areas around holes 8/9, 9, 10/1, and 13/15 to help golfers traverse between holes.  Please use the designated DG pathways and please do not drive though the wood chip areas.

If your ball should land in the newly created wood chip area, you are entitled to a free drop, with out penalty at your nearest point of relief.

We have taken advantage of some of the healthy Bermuda grass areas slated for removal and patched weaker turf areas on the course.  You will notice some of the new Bermuda grass around the greens and fairway bunker areas.  Having the ability to transplant healthy Bermuda grass has allowed for huge strides forward as we continue to transition the roughs to drought tolerant Bermuda grass for the coming years.

Below are images from our current wood chip installation process.

The course is in great condition, the weather has been absolutely perfect, and the greens are terrific and rolling at 11 on the stimp meter.   We hope you all enjoy the course

New Wood Chip Areas

For those of you who have recently played Angeles National Golf Club, you have noticed that the greens are in great condition and rolling at an 11.  You may have also noticed the new wood chip areas which have been recently introduced to the course.  We are still in the process of completing  installation of the new wood chip areas and will provide additional updates as we near completion.

All wood chip areas play as a lateral hazard.  You may play out of the wood chips with out grounding your club, or drop with in two club lengths of the point of entry with a one stroke penalty.

Please note, if your ball comes to rest on the outside of the waddle surrounding the wood chip area, you may take a drop with out penalty at your nearest point of relief, with in one club length, and no nearer the hole.

Thank you.

Pat Dempsey Inducted into the Long Drivers Of America Hall of Fame

Pat Dempsey was recently inducted into the Long Drives of America Hall Of Fame.
Below is the press release announcement and video of his acceptance speech.

SoCal Long Drive Stars
Headed To LDA Hall Of Fame

Dempsey, Milller Will Be Inducted
During 2012 RE/MAX WLDC Finals
ROANOKE, TEXAS (June 21, 2012) - Long Drivers of America (LDA) announced today that two multiple world champions from Southern California - Pat Dempsey and Frank Miller - are slated for induction into the prestigious LDA Hall of Fame.

Induction ceremonies for the pair are scheduled for Sunday, October 21 in Mesquite, Nev. during the finals of the 2012 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship Powered By Dick's Sporting Goods.

Dempsey, 55, a resident of Sunland, added 2011 RE/MAX world championships in both the Super Seniors (50+) and Grand Champions (55+) Divisions to the Senior (45+) Division title he captured in 2002.

Dempsey's 2011 feat of winning two RE/MAX world titles in the same year matched the benchmark established by LDA Hall of Fame member Bobby Wilson in 2009.

Dempsey made a serious bid to collect an unprecedented three titles at the 2011 RE/MAX world finals, reaching the Senior Division semifinals before bowing to eventual champion David Mobley.

Miller, 53, who lives in Covina, owns two RE/MAX world titles of his own. He claimed the Senior Division crown in 2007, defeating Dempsey in the finals with a then-record 394-plus yards. Miller also collected the Super Seniors crown in 2010, prevailing in a match-play finals showdown with Bobby Wilson, 367-365.

Miller, known as "Hollywood" captured the U.S. National Long Drive Championship (forerunner of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship) in 1990.

Previously inducted into the LDA Hall of Fame were: Scott DeCandia and Mike Gorton in 1996; Art Sellinger and Bobby Wilson in 2000; Sean "The Beast" Fister and Michael Hooper in 2002; Jason Zuback in 2003; RE/MAX International executive Mike Reagan in 2004; Evan "Big Cat" Williams and Fred Hooter in 2005; Stacey Shinnick in 2007; Brian Pavlet in 2008.

"We salute Pat and Frank for their sustained excellence in power golf events over an extended period of time," noted Sellinger, LDA's owner and chief executive officer. "Induction into the LDA Hall of Fame represents the pinnacle achievement for long drive professionals. Each of these fierce, battle-tested competitors richly deserves this recognition. We'll pay tribute to their careers in Mesquite this fall."

Last Week's Good Rain

Last Thursday afternoon we received .8" of much needed rain on the course!

The course soaked it up and we will be able to hold off our normal irrigation for a few days, a savings of about 1.5 million gallons of water!  Many of the drain basins you see on the course drain back into our lakes. So, not only did the turf and plants on the course benefit from the rain, we also filled up our lakes with surface run off that collects in our drainage system

Along with the rain came lightning and thunder. Our irrigation system suffered a lightning strike and a power surge blew out our central irrigation control system. A new computer is on its way and we will have to water manually for the next few days.

Though lightening is not too common for us, this serves as a reminder that lightning is a serious threat and should be respected when you are on golf course. Always take cover and or head to the clubhouse when you hear thunder or see a flash of lightning.

Enjoy the great course conditions.

Fall is Here

The first day of Autumn was September 22.  We now have 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. What this means is the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer! The growing season for Bermuda grass is coming to an end and cool season grasses are getting ready to start their cycle.

At this time of the year, soil temperatures start dropping, and as it nears the 70 degrees F mark, germination of Annual blue grass (Poa) is triggered.  The trigger of Poa growth is one major reason we at Angeles National do not aerify our Bentgrass greens in the fall.  If we were to aerify during the prime growing season for Poa we would open up the turf canopy in our greens, creating a place for poa to germinate and take it's foot hold.

Most golf course in the area have already aerified or they are getting ready to aerify their poa greens. And as you know, this process is very disruptive to golfers but a very much need process for the turf that has been through a long hot summer and now needs to recover by allowing oxygen and nutrients into the root zone so it can start to re-grow the roots it has lost over the summer months.

With respect to course maintenance, we will begin to overseed our tees during the last week in October. This process is non disruptive to play and will give us a nice playing surface for winter months.

Please come on out and enjoy the golf course as we transition into fall.

See you on the course!

Fairway and Rough Aerification

In an effort to maximize playing conditions of the fairways and rough, the fairways and rough will be aerated over the next couple of weeks.

Aerification of the fairway turf helps to control the fairway thatch layer which can be managed by breaking up the cores achieved from aeration.   Regular aerification of the fairways and rough will allow for the most consistent playing conditions thought out the year.

"Rough Work"

The greens are running great and are averaging 11".0" on the stimpmeter.

This summer we have been busy making strides forward in converting our roughs back to Bermudagrass. Bermuda is a warm season grass that is far more tolerant of drought conditions than cool season turf like Ryegrass and Annual bluegrass.

With our water restrictions and sandy soils, Bermuda is our ideal turf for this location! You may have noticed us aerifing, verticutting and drought stressing our roughs. We have been using cultural methods this season to make conditions less than favorable for cool season turf and giving the Bermudagrass a competitive edge during this summer growing season... Mother nature does the rest by adding heat.  The work we are doing this season to reintroduce our Bermuda grasses into the rough will go a long way to provide great conditioned and even rough next season.

During this process, you will notice weak/patchy areas in the rough where Bermudagrass is actively growing and trying to fill in. Other areas are marked with white paint for ground under repair. Please allow yourself relief by dropping outside the painted areas.

As you know, Angeles National is still under mandatory water restrictions set forth by the LADWP and we will continue to do our part in conserving this precious resource.

The greens are rolling, the course is playing great, firm, and fast.  See you on the course.

Titleist 2 makes a 1

Angeles National's own James Shafer made a hole in one for an albatross at the 310 yard Par 4 11th.

James carried his tee shot onto the middle of the green, the ball released, and rolled a few yards into the cup for a 1.  Everyone knew it would be close when it was in the air and speculated that it might go in.  But, to get to the green and see his ball at the bottom of the cup, was amazing.

Congratulations James to a truly remarkable shot.

Practice Range Divot Patterns

What is the proper way to take divots at the practice range? The answer depends on the type of grass used and the maintenance practices employed. At Angeles National Golf Club, we request that divots be taken from front to back, where your next shot is played from the beginning of your previous divot.

Proper divot patterns increase the usable hitting area, promote quicker turf healing time, and allow for an efficient use of space.

Good Divot Pattern

20 balls were hit from this station

Incorrect Divot Pattern

15 balls were hit from this station

Thank you and we will see you out at the practice range.

Aeration

It is that time of year again when it is necessary that we aerate our greens.  Aeration is a very important component of turf health and maintaining consistent and playable putting surfaces.

Aeration is essential to make the turf as healthy as possible, especially going into a dry summer, while promoting deeper, healthier roots, allowing them to draw water from deeper in the soil reservoir.  Warm and cool season grasses benefit form spring aeration and is our most effective tool at to ensure the rootzone remains capable of supporting healthy turf.

Aeration also improves the rate in which the water moves into the soil and increases the amount of space available for oxygen to penetrate the soil.  Both water penetration and increased oxygen are critical for root and plant growth.  These factors are increasingly important as we enter into the summer months.

We do our best to expedite healing times following aeration, however aeration is a necessary step in order to maintain our great playing surfaces.  Our greens will be back rolling smooth and quick in no time.

Course Beautification

You may have noticed some machinery any light construction on the course lately.  We are working on some course beautification and have planted a few hundred plants around the clubhouse and finishing holes here at Angeles National.  The bright red Bougainvillea recently planted is very drought tolerant and will give us plenty of color in the spring and summer months, a great contrast against the natural surroundings.

We have also added some Lantana to our main planter bed that separates number 1 and 10 tees. This plant is also very drought tolerant and will give us plenty of yellow and orange color through the spring and summer months.

Additionally, we have re-grassed several areas through the fairway, around the bunkers, and select tees to improve the playing experience.

Have a great day and we look forward to seeing you at Angeles National.

Angeles National Green Speeds

The Greens are approaching "Master's Speeds" and are rolling at 13'.5" +.

What is a Stimpmeter?

The Stimpmeter is an extruded aluminum bar, 36 inches long, with a V-shaped groove extending along its entire length. It has a precisely milled ball-release notch 30" from the tapered end (the end that rests on the ground).

The ball-release notch is designed so that a ball will always be released and start to roll when the Stimpmeter is raised to an angle of approximately 20 degrees. This feature ensures that the velocity of the ball will always be the same when it reaches the tapered end.
