Playing Conditions and Grasses during the Winter Months

Playing conditions during winter months are very good at Angeles National. The greens are in great shape and consistently hold their speeds.

Shorter day light hours and cooler night time temperatures will start to push our Bermuda grass fairways in to dormancy.

Most often, this begins when we receive our first frost of the season. Dormant fairways still play very good; just a little off color. Recovery on fairway divots will slow down, due to the Bermuda grass going dormant. So please fill your divots!

Cart traffic can also be a factor. Please use cart paths where possible and observer the 90 degree rule.

As warm season turfs like Bermuda begin to go dormant, we will begin to see a resurgence of Poa on the golf course. Cool moist temperatures are ideal conditions for Poa and Ryegrass. In winter months, Poa and Ryegrass will out compete our dormant turf until Spring, when warmer temperatures return.
