Playing Conditions and Grasses during the Winter Months
Playing conditions during winter months are very good at Angeles National. The greens are in great shape and consistently hold their speeds.
Shorter day light hours and cooler night time temperatures will start to push our Bermuda grass fairways in to dormancy.
Most often, this begins when we receive our first frost of the season. Dormant fairways still play very good; just a little off color. Recovery on fairway divots will slow down, due to the Bermuda grass going dormant. So please fill your divots!
Cart traffic can also be a factor. Please use cart paths where possible and observer the 90 degree rule.
As warm season turfs like Bermuda begin to go dormant, we will begin to see a resurgence of Poa on the golf course. Cool moist temperatures are ideal conditions for Poa and Ryegrass. In winter months, Poa and Ryegrass will out compete our dormant turf until Spring, when warmer temperatures return.

This morning the greens were stimped and number 4 was running at 10’-6”. It has been 12 days since our overseeding of the tee boxes and with the recent rain, we are beginning to see some germination.
We are quickly approaching the season for frost delays. When temperatures drop to 38 degrees and below, we will begin to see frost on the golf course. Frost tends to move in just before sunrise making the call for a frost delay a last minute decision.
Walking or driving on frozen turf will damag the plant and can take weeks to recover.
During frost delays, the driving range tee will be open for hitting balls off of mats until the frost lifts. There is always plenty of hot coffee and good food in the restaurant while waiting for the temperatures to rise.
Have a great day and see you out on the course.

Tee Box Over Seeding
We are in the process of verti-cutting and overseeding our tees.
Verti-cutting helps reduce thatch layer and insures good seed to soil contact, which keeps the teeing ground in optimum condition.
We will be open for play during the overseeding process with only minor disruption. All tee markers will remain in one location and will not move until the grow in of the overseed is completed. This process is expected to take approximately 3 weeks.
All tee boxes are being overseeded with Ryegrass at a rate on 25#/1000 sq. ft.
The greens have been in great condition and are speeding up. They have been rolling consistently at a stimp reading of 10 – 10.5 feet.
A few weeks ago Angeles National received about 1" of rain and the course is reaping the benefits! The course is in great condition and the weather has been perfect.
Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you at Angeles National.

Summer and Water
As we enter into summer 2011, the city of Los Angeles is entering into its 4th straight year of mandatory water restrictions. Despite the preceding wet winter and the announcement from our Governor, Jerry Brown in spring 2011, “the drought is over”, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has not lifted water restrictions. At Angeles National Golf Club, we are dependent upon LADWP water to irrigate our course and therefore are still under the severe water restriction placed upon us.
Angeles National Golf Club has been ordered to reduce its water use by 20%. We are responsible users of this precious natural resource and we will continue to abide by the restrictions while striving to provide our members and guest the best possible playing conditions.
Thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy you experience at Angeles National Golf Club.
